Obituary for Adonis Taylor

Adonis Taylor
On January 10, 2023, Adonis Taylor passed away at the age of 71 at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John's after a short illness. Several members of his family and two of his homecare workers were with him when he took his last breath.

Adonis Taylor was born in Grole, Hermitage Bay, to Reginald Taylor and Agnes Burton Taylor on August 21, 1951.

He was born with many challenges including being unable to walk until the age of five. With the aid of homecare workers, Donnie was able to live with his parents in Grole until the age of 16.

In 1967, the very difficult decision was made to take him to the Waterford Hospital in St. John's. By 1995, the provincial and federal governments made a decision that people such as Donnie would be cared for by members of their families and additional staff.

Two of his brothers--Ernest and Winston--took on the responsibility. Ernest was the live-in supervisor from 1995 to 2008. And Winston later took on the same role from 2011 to 2023.

Donnie was predeceased by his parents, Reginald and Agnes and brother, Reginald (Sandra) and sister, Elizabeth. He leaves to mourn brothers, Ernest (Bonnie) and Winston; sisters, Theresa (Kerwin) Stewart, Cathy (Vincent) Webber, and Roma (Wade) Osmond; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Adonis was adored by everyone who met him. He could not talk or hear, but he certainly had a way of making himself understood. His charming personality kept everyone on their toes.

A number of doctors and nurses were very significant to Donnie's health throughout the years. After getting out of the Waterford Hospital in 1995, Dr. Jeff White gave him the best healthcare available anywhere.

In addition, there was the kind attention given by Dr. Devereaux as Donnie recently struggled with pneumonia at the Health Sciences Centre.

There have been many homecare workers over the years, too many to mention. We are grateful to Stephen Howell for being the live-in supervisor for the years 2009 and 2010.

Recently we were fortunate to have had six dedicated workers who have given Donnie excellent care--Jennifer, Tonya, Ajong, Perry, Kathleen, and Samantha. We are grateful.

During the latter part of his life, it was easy to see that he had become attached to one of the workers. It is also worthy of note that this young woman also loved Adonis dearly!

Cremation has taken place.

A funeral service will be held this summer at Spencer's Funeral Home Chapel in Harbour Breton where the family resettled in 1969.

Burial will follow at St. Bartholomew's Anglican Cemetery.
