Obituary for Naomi Elizabeth Lakey

Naomi Elizabeth Lakey
It is with profound sadness that the family of Naomi Elizabeth Lakey announce her peaceful passing at Northern Lights Regional Health Centre in Fort McMurray, Alberta on August 26th, 2020.

Left to mourn with many loving memories, son Robin Lakey, (Darlene), nephew Philip Yarn residing at Fort McMurray AB, grandchild Robyn Lakey (Scott), great grandchildren Charlotte (Lottie) & Norah residing at Picton, ON. Special Friends Rhonda Bungay, English Hr. West & Sadie Lawrence of Mose Ambrose, NL. Naomi was predeceased by her parents Kenneth & Sarah (Lottie) Yarn, her beloved brother John and sister Mary Yarn.

The narrative of Naomi’s life is one of interest and adventure. Her first chapters began in the picturesque communities of Coombs Cove and Mose Ambrose, on the South Coast of Newfoundland. As a young lady, her taste for adventure led her to Ontario where she joined the Royal Canadian Airforce. Shortly after this chapter, she was living in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where she worked for a number of years at the Waterford Hospital with her best friends, Jim and Monica Yarn. They lived life to the fullest and made memories they would forever cherish.

Undeniably, the most important chapter in the life of Naomi, would be motherhood. She returned to Mose Ambrose in the late 1950’s to raise her beloved and cherished son, Robin. A strong, proud and unconventional single mother, Naomi broke the conventional mold of the time and with the support of her family and close friends, began a career as stewardess at CN Marine. Naomi became a well-known fixture on the coastal boats of Newfoundland and Labrador and made numerous friends along the way.

In the late 90’s, she retired from her career and devoted her time to one of the roles she cherished most in life, being the proud grandmother to her granddaughter, Robyn. Family became the focal point of her life as Naomi cared for her mother, Lottie and nephew, Philip Yarn. The days of her youth were filled with a love of music, dancing, and keeping up on fashion trends and although this would forever be a part of her, she was also a devoted parishioner of St. Paul’s Anglican Church and an avid bingo player.

Naomi departed her home in 2013 and moved to Fort McMurray, Alberta to be closer to her son, Robin. Although she missed her friends and home in Newfoundland, she very much cherished the last 7 healthy and happy years she spent with her family. August 26, 2020 marked the final chapter in the narrative of Naomi’s life as she passed peacefully in her 92nd year. Naomi was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend. The mark she left on the minds of all who knew her will forever stand the test of time.

Cremation took place in Alberta. A service for family and friends with interment will take place in Mose Ambrose, NL at a later date.
